Allegheny Car Rental Tax Hike Highlights Need for Federal Law Support Bill to End Discriminatory Car Rental Taxes
Allegheny County (PA) Council voted this week to approve a $2 per day increase of a tax targeting car rental customers. The council voted in favor of the discriminatory tax despite active opposition by members of the Pittsburgh BTA (PBTA), including PBTA Vice President Sean McCurdy and Paul Lang, both of whom are also members of the NBTA Board. Lang testified at a hearing on the proposal, and McCurdy became a media spokesperson against the tax increase.
A McCurdy letter was published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and he spoke on a leading area radio program, explaining why the tax hike would be bad for the local economy. Numerous other members of PBTA wrote letters to the County Council in opposition to the increase.
The Allegheny County increase is only the latest in an explosion of discriminatory car rental taxes across the United States. Local jurisdictions continue to introduce and increase taxes that unfairly target car rentals to pay for unrelated local projects. There are now more than 100 such taxes in 43 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to engaging local members and chapters to speak up against such proposals in their areas, NBTA is actively supporting a bill in Congress that would stop the piling on of these taxes and you can play an important part in getting that measure passed. To encourage your Senators and Congressional Representatives to support H.R. 2453, visit NBTA’s Legislative Action Center.
